• A Crumpled Note, A Heartfelt Moment

I’m at the supermarket when, all of a sudden, an elderly man approaches me. He is tall, well-groomed, with a pleasant cologne and a dark green Sardinian-style cap. With a gentle smile, he asks: “Excuse me, could you help me read my shopping list? I can’t see well; I forgot my glasses at home.”

He hands me a small, slightly crumpled piece of paper, written in almost childlike handwriting. Yet, I’m certain it was written by his wife.

On the paper, it says: saffron, bread, oranges, bananas, eggs, and parsley. I quickly check and notice that saffron and bread are missing from his cart. I point this out to him and repeat several times where he can find them, offering to accompany him if necessary.

At his age, I tell him with a smile, it’s normal for eyesight to fade a little. Proudly, the gentleman makes a point to tell me that he is 90 years old and, despite everything, still does his shopping on his own. I can’t help but compliment him on his sharpness and independence.

Next to his cart, carefully tied, is a Jack Russell terrier. As I get closer to check what’s in the cart, the dog remains calm and sweet. I can’t resist petting her. With a smile, he says: “She’s very good; she wouldn’t hurt a fly. Dogs are a reflection of their owners.”

After I help him, he thanks me sincerely and adds: “Intelligence belongs to women, not men. If I had asked a man for help, he probably would’ve given me a strange look.”

Moral: Kindness is an invisible bridge that connects us, regardless of age, differences, or circumstances. A small gesture, like reading a shopping list, can turn a casual encounter into a moment of humanity and sweetness that stays in the heart.

    ______
